Why I Moved to Idaho

From Laid Off to Living Fully: How Real Estate Changed My Life
By Michelle Bailey – BKT Idaho, Powered by PLACE at Keller Williams Realty Boise
I didn’t plan to be in real estate.
I was hired as an office manager for a real estate company—even though I had zero real estate experience. I figured if I was going to be in the industry, I should probably get my license. My boss agreed, and off to school I went.
But life had other plans.
Just as I earned my license, the market shifted. That real estate company never opened, and I was laid off just three weeks later.
Taking a Leap—Even When It’s Scary
Out of work and unsure of what came next, I joined the first real estate team I interviewed with. I’ll be honest—they didn’t think I’d make it. I wasn’t talkative, I wasn’t a natural salesperson, and I definitely didn’t fit the typical “Realtor mold.”
But here’s what I did have: grit, hunger, and a reason.
What I loved about real estate wasn’t the houses—it was the freedom it gave me. Freedom to be present for my kids. Freedom to build a life on my terms. Freedom to earn as much as I was willing to work for.
When It Got Tough (And It Did)
There were plenty of times when I wanted to quit. When deals fell through, money was tight, and the stress felt unbearable. I told myself I’d just get a “real job.” A safe, 9-to-5 job with steady pay and no surprises.
But every time I thought about leaving, I realized something deeper:
If I worked for someone else, I’d lose what mattered most.
I wouldn’t earn what I wanted. I wouldn’t be room mom. I wouldn’t be there for the field trips, the Little League games, or the daily moments with my kids.
Real estate gave me that. And I wasn’t willing to give it up.
